Nagai Power Private Limited has started a new journey under a new management post completion of the insolvency resolution process in July 2024 and the award of the Order by the Hon’ble National Company Law Tribunal, Hyderabad, to the successful Resolution Applicant – Smartgen Infra Private Limited.

At the core of Nagai Power plant’s operations is a 450 TPH Ansaldo boiler, equipped with front and rear wall firing, a balanced draft system, and a pulverised fuel firing arrangement. To ensure cleaner combustion and reduce atmospheric emissions, the boiler utilizes Low NOₓ burners, significantly minimizing nitrogen oxide which is a major air pollutant.
Additionally, a high-efficiency Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) is installed to capture and eliminate over 99% of fly ash particles from flue gases. This ensures compliance with environmental regulations and supports cleaner air quality in the surrounding region.

The plant uses Light Diesel Oil (LDO) for startup, after which a blend of domestic and imported coal is used for continuous operation. Power is generated through a BHEL turbine generator, and electricity is transmitted via a 230 kV switchyard to the TNEB substation at Thiruvarur, ensuring smooth integration into the state’s transmission grid.

One of Nagai Power Private Limited’s key sustainability initiatives is its innovative water usage strategy. Unlike traditional thermal power plants that rely on river or groundwater, NPPL is one of its kind to utilize treated municipal sewage water sourced from Nagapattinam Municipality. A planned 400 KLD raw Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will process this water, aligning the plant’s operations with the principles of the circular economy — transforming waste into a usable resource while minimizing environmental impact.
The plant also features an 18 m³/hr Demineralized Water Treatment Plant and a full-scale Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), enabling efficient water recycling and supporting a near-zero liquid discharge model.
